Some contractor had run over a stop sign in a new development. I used it to stage this photo (like the original...) and talk about his late great grandfather’s service on PT boats in the South Pacific.

True story.

The eeriest part of this shot for me is that there were still several hundred (if not thousands) of Japanese soldiers still in the tunnels below them, biding their time.

Yes, there was still a very long way to go. Back in 2015, my mother-in-law was buried at Arlington with her husband (USMC) and we spent the afternoon touring the cemetery. We made our way over to the Iwo Jima statue, and I photographed this headstone nearby. It belongs to Rene Gagnon, one of the six Marines who raised the flag. In the photo of the statue below, he is represented by the Marine on the right. Of those six Marines, three were killed on Iwo Jima. The others survived the war.
